Expression City’s dance programs for youth and adults offer a variety of recreational and pre-professional classes six days a week, including our Homeschool Performing Arts Academy and afternoon/evening classes. Our core curriculum focuses on ballet, contemporary/lyrical, jazz, tap, modern, acro, and hip hop for ages 5 through adult. We also offer dance for little ones starting at age 3 (please see our Minis section).
Beginner Ballet focuses on the fundamentals of classical ballet technique and instilling a passion to move. Using creative imagery and imagination, students will gain a basic understanding of both alignment and artistry, as well as an appreciation for the discipline of dancing.
Int/Advanced Ballet uses imagery and imagination to instill the basic principles of classical ballet technique and to inspire a passion to move. This ballet class focuses on the directionality movement pathways, and kinetic coordinations within classical ballet, to instill a dynamic sense of balance, poise, and discipline.
Beginner Contemporary dance class combines elements of dance from several different genres, including ballet, lyrical, and jazz. Students will learn to use both the body and the face to express themselves through music.
Int/Adv Contemporary dance class utilizes the movement syllabus developed by Banning Bouldin, Flooring/Falling/Sliding, to promote awareness, stability, and specificity. The exercises are rooted in movement fundamentals from Laban and Taylor techniques. Improvisation tools and methods are also used to develop a curiosity for movement invention and imaginative research.
Modern (Martha Graham Technique)
Recognized as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Martha Graham created a movement language based upon the expressive capacity of the human body. Her style grew from her experimentation with the elemental movements of contraction and release, and Graham technique is now viewed by many to be the foundation of modern technique.
Jazz class is built on traditional jazz movement while incorporating ballet technique. Students will be exposed to a variety of jazz styles, such as Broadway, Classical, and Contemporary to provide comprehensive training in this dance form.
Students will work on basic technique and tap fundamentals while also learning Broadway choreography and some of the latest tap styles in this tap class.
From beginner to advanced, our hip hop classes use the latest clean music and have elements of choreography, popping, locking, breaking, and freestyle to create one of our most popular dance classes. Hip Hop Dance Company is available for enthusiastic dancers.
ABBA (Absolute Beginner Ballet for Adults)
This ballet class is designed for adults who have a passion and desire to learn ballet but have no prior dance experience. The class provides a welcoming and friendly environment while teaching the fundamentals of ballet in a relaxed and comfortable class setting.
Adagio (Dance Lifts or Acro Dance)
Adagio is a succession of slow, soft, lyrical, and continuous movements. It creates the illusion that the positions flow from one into another and is a partner-driven endeavor. This class will focus on the concepts of timing, communication, and grace.
Musical Theatre Dance
Musical Theatre Dance is the second hour of our musical theatre program. Choreography will be based on the musical theatre performance selection.
Street Jams for Hip Hop Students
Street Jams are events where you can jam/battle, take part in a class or workshop, see performances by top dancers, and party in a clean, family-friendly, hip hop environment.
Stilt Dancing is an advanced stilt class that incorporates various forms of dance on 2.5 feet tall peg stilts. This is a performance company class, and students must have instructor approval to enroll. Prerequisite: Stilt Walking Class.
Poetry and Movement
By overlapping the ideas and emotions of poets and dancers, we’re creating a new art form with a more powerful effect than either might have produced alone. A form of storytelling, Poetry and Movement classes will help students develop their minds, bodies, and emotions.
This class combines both creative writing and movement. Students in Spoken Moves will be taught the fundamentals of creative writing, poetry, spoken word performance, and basic movement. The goal of this class is to use these art forms to create an original piece of artwork.
Stepping or Step-Dancing
is a form of percussive dance in which the participant’s entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps. Think you lack rhythm, it doesn’t matter! By the end of this class you will learn how to stomp, step, clap and move to a beat in conjunction with drum, music or plain ole acapella!! Come and join us in a fun and inviting environment!
Experiential Anatomy offers accurate and clear instruction of human musculoskeletal structure with an eye toward efficient and pleasant movement. With a fascinated, informed curiosity about our landscape beneath the skin, we are able to conceptualize and create easy, efficient movement, from the elegantly simple to the decorated and complex.
